I loved the entire program! I loved every part of the trip. The food was very simple and delicious. Oscar was so kind and welcoming. He was very helpful and I appreciate him showing us around the city. Liseth and Manuel were phenomenal at hosting us. I became so attached to the family over the week. Lisethe was always ready to help and was so very kind. Her food was delicious. I love how she encouraged us to speak Spanish.
The volunteer projects were incredibly fulfilling. I enjoyed working on the stoves. I am happy with the interaction we had with the maya women. I hope to come back one day to see the families that we have helped.

But truthfully, the project has helped us much more than we have helped it. The Maya women have given us to much and I cannot wait to return to Boston to share my experiences.

I absolutely loved my spring break in Xela, helping local Maya families. Through Oscar, one of the most hard-working men I have ever met, this experience was possible. It was so reinforcing to my life and overall was amazing. I hope Umass Boston can forge a lasting partnership with Xela and Rural Volunteers, so many other students and families can learn cross-culturally.

After spending almost five weeks in Sri Lanka, I know I definitely want to come back. I have been volunteering teaching Buddhist monks in a local monastery, and it has been an amazing experience. Even though there was a huge range of English speaking abilities at the monastery, I still was able to hopefully teach them some. But most important was what I learned from the monks. Their way of life is so different from mine, growing up in a large city. Also, the host family I stayed with in Galle, was beyond kind. They have been very hospitable and fed me some of the most delicious Sri Lankan cuisine. I highly recommend volunteering here.

I was pleasantly surprised with the accommodations. It was great to have beds with mosquito nets already set up. The rooms were clean too. I loved how friendly everyone was who lived here. It was so helpful and fun to live with a family. I really appreciated all of the food. It was helpful that we started off with meals that were easy for our stomachs and then we also got to try more authentic Ghanaian food. I felt very safe and comfortable.
I cannot say enough positive things about the host. Franklin worked hard to make sure we were happy. He and his family took very good care of us. He helped show us around town and he answered all of our requests and concerns. He also went with us on all of our excursions and helped us navigate new places and situations. We got to interact with his family each night. We taught them games and songs and they taught us.
I came here with a group from my university-Illinois State University. Our school has been planning these trips through Rustic for years, so they continued to use Rustic to find this placement.
My only other comments are that I am very pleased with my experience and I am so thankful to have met such wonderful people.
I would definitely recommend this experience to my friends and family. I think it is a great way to learn more about the world and about yourself. I also loved having the chance to work with the children and put smiles on their faces.
