I spent three weeks volunteering in Peru’s coastal capital of Lima. It turned it to be one of the most fun and fulfilling experiences of my life, and I really wish I was able to stay longer. I participated in the Special Needs/Childcare program, and at first it was a little overwhelming since I had no prior experience with working with the special needs, as well as a very small amount of Spanish speaking abilities. However, after a day or two, I felt as if I could have done it for the rest of my life. Everyone was so appreciative of us and they were always happy to see us at the placement. Leaving the children was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do in a long time. In just three short weeks I felt as if they became a piece of me and my happiness. Nothing was better than walking into the placement and seeing them all smile and get excited to see us. It felt so great to be appreciated and see what we were doing make such a positive impact on them, and I hope I can inspire others to step out of their comfort zone and experience something as beneficial as this volunteer program has been for me. In regards to the volunteer house and the utilization of free time, I couldn’t have imagined it be any better. I met people from all around the world, so I learned about more cultures than just Peru. I will dearly miss the times I had relaxing and exploring the city with my new friends. Sometimes, I think I miss them more than anything. The people you meet on these journeys can become just as important to you as the journey itself, and I definitely experienced that. However, it is so cool that I am now able to say I have friends all around the world and I look forward to seeing them again one day. We were well taken care of throughout the trip with good food, a nice accommodation and knowledgeable supervisors and coordinators that helped us with whatever we needed. I’m so glad I decided to volunteer with IVHQ in Lima. It will be an experience I will treasure for the rest of my life!

It is my best experience ever in an unfamiliar city. I was assigned to a childcare organization called LRDE in Phnom Penh. These kids lacking in material well-being received us with a warm welcome and an open mind. They made my day when they ran to our tuk-tuk car at the gate every morning, yelling sweetly 'hello!' I must appreciate their kindness and goodness. And much to my joy as I witness their progress- putting the waste stuff into the garbage bin instead of merely throwing about, washing hands spontaneously before eating or hugging us after eating. I naturally fit in the city and people and am convinced that I am a tiny part of the great mission to make the city a better place. IVHQ provides accommodation and food in the volunteer house , which is also the local office. The staff there are very helpful and warmhearted, and they also supported us in safety keeping, transportation recommendation, even bargaining and tour guidance. They helped us better understand the situation there and confronted us with great patience and consideration. And the food provided in the volunteer house was awesome. Just for one thing, the room without air conditioner in tropical area is somehow a challenge, though I got used to it soon afterwards. Overall, I would highly recommend this experience to others.

I volunteered in Costa Rica using IVHQ. I participated in their turtle conservation project and spent my time volunteering at Verdiazul. Verdiazul is a non-profit organization stationed at playa Junquillal. I have traveled previously but this was my first solo experience traveling and I am super grateful that I did so through IVHQ. Their in-country support was very helpful, and I was able to meet people that have the same interests and passions I do. I made some of my bestfriends while volunteering through IVHQ and we still stay in touch to this day. The turtle conservation project was stationed on a local beach and our daily activities included cleaning, planting trees, checking the hatchery for temperatures and to see if any nests hatched, releasing baby turtles once the nest hatched, night beach patrols, retrieving eggs as the turtle was laying them, among many other activities. It was one of the most amazing experiences to be able to dig up hatched nests of baby turtles and to release them on the beach at sunset! I was also able to catch the eggs in my hands while a turtle was laying them on the beach during one of my night patrols! Lastly, my favorite experience was when a two-headed baby Leatherback sea turtle hatched and we were able to release him on the beach. The people who own the organization had never seen a two-headed baby sea turtle before so it was a truly unique experience. Overall, the program was very affordable and the housing, food, and project was all great. I would highly recommend this program!

Volunteering in Peru was the most amazing experience I've ever had. I had the opotunity to get to know new people, making friends and having a new family around the world. The program was so complete, everything was clear and safe. The house was great, as well as the food and the staff there. Everybody was there to make it feel like home.
I can see that I'm a different person now. Tolerance, friendship and empathy are the words that can describe my 2 months in Perú.

Volunteering with IVHQ was an incredible experience. I met amazing friends and learned so much about Peruvian culture. It was an excellent way to visit the country and become immersed in the culture while still being a tourist. My host family was fantastic and the program staff are very helpful and friendly and work to make it a great experience.
