Original Volunteers

Ghana was the ideal "first time volunteering" destination in Africa; a safe, politically stable, friendly country steeped in West-African culture and tradition. The project I attended was based in a rural village some 5-hours drive North from the capital. The volunteer house was a great place and had a good community-spirit. All individual rooms, with communal outdoor area, kitchen and a lounge (which has a TV and DVD player!!) It also had electricity, running water, showers and western-style toilets.

Original Volunteers were a fantastic organisation in the UK, and they people I spoke to were always very helpful (including during my time in Ghana when I had to email them - they got straight back and solved my problem!). Original Volunteers definitely were very helpful and friendly! :)

The organisation in Ghana which Original Volunteers sent me to was a local NGO involved in Education, Construction, Healthcare and Outreach work in the villages. The NGO was ran by a local politician, who had 3 members of staff below him.

I had the opportunities to teach in local schools - both primary and senior high schools. The schools have wonderful, enthusiastic, positive children who are very eager to learn and love the fact that Westerners are there teaching them. Some tips would be to bring pens, pencils, crayons and as much coloured paper as possible (the local shops sell bland stationary like white paper and standard pens and pencils, but the kids love anything coloured which has "luxury" value!). As for jotters and ordinary pens and pencils, these can be bought extremely cheap in the local stationary shop. The kids absolutely LOVE crayons, colouring-in pens, stationary, picture-books (especially ones teaching English) and school jotters. Also, the local schools are very deserving of things like chalk, blackboard dusters, teaching material, etc. (even simple things like pretend-clocks to teach kids the time, etc).

In addition to teaching, we also had a fantastic opportunity to do construction work and (if you're a healthcare professional) you can do nursing and medical-related volunteering with the local hospital too. Very good opportunities.

In our spare time, we had amazing trips with the other volunteers. Most people came on their own as solo-travellers, and we went in January-March when it was quieter, which was great because we bonded very well as a group. There's plenty places to explore locally, but at weekends it's cheap to hire a minibus + driver and drive down to the Coast. Although it's a 5-hour journey, it's amazingly cheap and the road-trip is an experience in itself!

All in all, a great experience, met great volunteers, the locals are really nice, and Original Volunteers in England were very helpful to me, including whilst I was in Ghana. :)

Global Crossroad

My experience at the orphanage with the children is one of an emotional and heart-warming adventure. I shared a lot of good memories, affection, and love with the kids.
Furthermore, I got attached very quickly to the kids, and their ignorance, beauty, and kindness are extremely inspiring. I had the chance to discover the environment and to see the wild animals. I also went to some environmental conservation, which was very pleasant, and learning about the culture was really amazing. I had the best two weeks of my life here in Galle, Sri Lanka. Mickael is an amazing person, and his family's members are as kind as himself. They were willing to help me whenever I needed. Plus, Mickael's wife is a good cook. I will never forget them. :)

International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ)

IVHQ is super helpful, I was doing a four-weeks Childcare program in Thailand, and this was my first time volunteering abroad, I was nervous at first, but the IVHQ staff contacted me and gave me a lot of guide and useful information, so I can prepare well before I go.

I enjoyed my experience in Thailand so much, it was so rewarding. I made a lot of International friends, the food and accommodation were good, we got a lot of chance to interact with the local people and learn about their culture, we also travelled a lot and explored a lot.

The local staffs were super nice and helpful, they provided good food, they taught us Thai language, they translated for us all the time, they cared about our health. one day, one volunteer was sick, one staff drove her to the local clinic immediately, we were very impressed.

Overall, Thailand is a amazing place, people are so friendly, and IVHQ is definitely a good choice.

Projects Abroad

My experience with Projects Abroad in San Pedro, Belize as a part of their public health placement was nothing short of extraordinary. I met wonderful people, both affiliated with the organization and the locals that I worked with in the community. Projects Abroad prides itself on supportive staff, and I can say that this is one of the strengths of the organization, as I knew that any issue or concern that I had would be solved as soon as possible. I was also extremely satisfied with the nature of my work - Projects Abroad was very up front about the tasks that I would be completing, and these tasks were followed and completed upon my arrival. Additionally, the host family Projects Abroad paired me with was so accommodating and generous. Perhaps the best part of this organization, and what certainly drew me to it, was the concept of having flexible dates. As a college student with a busy schedule, I was able to pick dates that fit my schedule, and quickly transitioned to my placement. I highly recommend traveling and volunteering with Projects Abroad!

CADIP

Volunteer experience in the East of Iceland.

I chose this volunteer project mainly because it involved many of my interests. I enjoy hiking, camping and being outdoors, and I get out of the city as often as possible. I am also environmentally-conscious and have been looking for a volunteer opportunity to allow me to clean up the earth in any way possible. In addition to all of this, I chose this project as I have always wanted to go to Iceland, and for me it was an extraordinary experience to explore the Icelandic nature and landscape.

Feedback is amazing. I loved the program and so did everyone else I was with. It's seriously an amazing opportunity and experience. Meeting all of these different people from all over the world and becoming friends was amazing. I really liked the laid back structure to the program, and the leaders were great.
