My name is Winnie Mangeni. I am a Kenyan student studying in the United States at the University of Notre Dame. I was looking for something to do over spring break that was connected to my passion,Women Empowernment. I found Global Crossroads online and I thought it would not be possible to work with them for only 10 days of spring break. However,to my surprise, they made it possible with my visa application (as a foreigner) and also my stay in Guatemala. The program director, Oscar Gomez made my stay very comfortable and I am really thankfull that I met a person like hiim. This included my stay and my communication abilities. I spoke no Spanish at all! The only word I knew was Ola! By the end of the 10 days, I was able to hold a conversaton in Spanish! My host family was welcoming and the food was absolutely amazing and new from what I am used to. Moreover, I volunteered at the Municipal Council for Women in Quetzaltenango,Guatemala. This gave me a good perspective on the rights of women in other parts of the world. We were able to march in solidarity for women during International Womens Day where I got to see more women the organisation worked with. Also, they profided psycology services to the women as well as organised different activities to participate in. Everyday was an adventure to explore Guatemala in the evening to see the beautiful landforms, architecture, hot springs, horse rides and also the lakes and beaches. I would highly recommend anyone for this project. Its an eye opener and pushes you outside your comfortzone.I never expected to do this in only 10 days but guess what! Anything is possible! One advise to all volunteers is that they should be patient and open-minded with a zeal to explore.I cannot wait to work with Global Crossroads again!.

I am Patricia from CT. USA, I travelled on my own to Sri Lanka in Feb, 2016 for a 2 week stay and had the most amazing experience ever. I spent my stay with host family Michael Ferreira and his family. and volunteered at the Orphanage that housed 75 children, infants up to 5 years of age. I truly enjoyed every day helping & playing with the children in the mornings and had free time in the afternoon to explore the many beautiful beaches and sights in the area. I met several other great volunteers from all over the world and we had a great time sightseeing and even enjoyed to go back to help at the orphanage in the afternoons if we chose to. Michael & his family were extremely gracious and so very accommodating. Our host mom Pushba is a fantastic cook and we enjoyed 3 delicious home made Sri Lankan meals a day, Michael took us sightseeing and planned optional day trips if we wanted to go.
I highly recommend this program and personally cannot wait to return one day soon and bring my daughter to show her the humbleness and kindness and special needs of this great Country and their amazing people.

For a week in February 2016, my husband, myself and our two children (ages 11 & 13) participated in a volunteer week in the town of Queztaltenango, Guatemala. This was a truly wonderful, rewarding experience for all of us. Communication with the staff in the U.S. as well as the in country staff was both timely and helpful. They always addressed any concerns we had and made arrangements for us ahead of time. Our host family was lovely and accommodations were clean and food delicious! We participated in two projects while we were there. In the mornings we helped build a stove for a couple. The greatest part was being able to start and finish a project and leave something visible and tangible for all to see. My children were truly amazed that they completed this stove. Our project in the afternoon was with children at risk of becoming street kids. From the first day we all felt we couldn't spend enough time with these beautiful children. We are grateful for all their love and friendship and we left better having known them. This trip was the experience of a lifetime. I would not hesitate recommending global crossroads to anyone. I hope to one day be able to participate in another program of theirs.

My 12-year old son, 16-year old daughter, and I volunteered at Hogar Cristiano Children's Home in Puntarenas, Costa Rica for one week in February 2016. It was an amazing experience. We stayed in a clean, safe, simple, and lovely home of a Costa Rican woman with several other volunteers. She cooked us three delicious meals per day (including packing our lunch for our volunteer job every day. Our coordinator, Lauren, was always available with suggestions, advice, and We took two wonderful excursions during our time off--one to Isla Tortuga and one to Ocean Ranch Park. I can't wait to return. I highly recommend the program.

Hi everybody,

We are two french girls of 23 years old, Julie and Ariane, and we pass through Globalcrossroad organisation to be volunteer in an orphanage in Galle, in Sri Lanka during one month.
We were housed in the daughter of the volunteer's coordinator.
We had a genial host. The familly was very nice and kind, they help us for many think like arranged tuktuk transport at local price, give us good adress to do shopping and to find restaurant. They also were very helpful when we were a little be sick.
The meals was very good, it was typical sri lankan food but no spicy.
About the accomodation, it was also very confortable, we had a big room and a big bathroom. It was like a second familly for us.

Regarding the work at the orphanage it was aslo a very good experience.
At the beginning, it was a little bit difficult to communicate with the staff which doesn't speak english but day after day it was more and more easier and convivial.
The first day, We were a little bit schocked. Indeed, it's a different culture and a different way to treat them but we quickly saw, that there were a lot of love and the children were happy.
About our activities, we played with us, we washed them, we fed them.

Michael, the coordinator, was very attentive, he visit us very often to know if we were satisfyied by our volunteering.
In addition, the Julie's familly came to visit us in Sri Lanka and Michael organized for them a big trip.

So, to conclude, it's was a great experience, and without doubts, one day we will come back!

Thank You to everyone !!

Ariane and Julie
