I have been volunteering abroad for the last few years with different organizations, but A Broader View organization has by far met all my expectations and more. I traveled to Ghana in May 2012 for two weeks on a Medical Volunteer mission. It was my first time traveling to Africa and I did not know what to expect. ABV did a phenomenal job at making me feel safe and welcome. I was picked up by Edem, the founder of an orphanage in the Volta region and lived with fellow volunteers and his family. His family and the neighborhood were very welcoming and assisted in every way they could. Aside from my room and food, they provided me with friendship and taught me Ewe their language and shared their customs. I came to Ghana expecting to learn about their healthcare system and to work aside physicians and nurses at the local hospital and clinics. Not only did I learn about their healthcare system, I was able to share my ideas and thoughts on how to improve and become more efficient within the hospital and clinics. The medical staff and patients were very kind and allowed my observations, inquires and assistance with procedures. Aside from working at the hospital and clinics I also taught daily at the local high school. I taught and assisted with writing a teaching manual on heath, hygiene, and HIV/AIDS and STI/STD prevention. Also I volunteered at Heart Haven, the local orphanage. Heart Haven has 15 children living within the compound and half of them are HIV positive. These children were so beautiful, intelligent, gracious and loved volunteers. In the short two weeks that I was in Ghana I had gained more knowledge, friendships and experience than I would have ever expected. ABV did an excellent job with allowing me to work in areas that interest me, areas that allowed me to explore other options and weekend travel time to fulfill my knowledge about Ghana. I am happy to announce I am working aside Edem to fund-raise for Heart Have and currently working on opening a free health and lab clinic. If you would like an experience of a life time volunteering I would 100% recommend A Broader View Volunteers. Thank you ABV for everything and I look forward to my trip back to Ghana next year.

This experience is one of my favorite life experiences thus far. It is my second time traveling abroad alone. I was in Chile doing a homestay and working in an ophanage for 3 months. I had the most amazing family that I was placed with. They were great about showing me around, helping me out, dealing with my food allergies. I loved where I worked and it was extremely difficult to say goodbye. I always tell people to search for a program that really gives you what you, as an individual, need to have a good time abroad. Keeping an open mind and being flexible are the 2 most important tools you need, even more important than speaking the language. I definitely came across more than a few obstacles but my family was great in helping me through. While looking for a program I asked a lot of questions and recieved answers quickly but once I arrived I felt it was really up to me to figure things out and make the most of my trip. (but again, that is part of choosing to do a homestay). I had the phone number for the in country coordinator but I really relied on my family to help me out. That being said, it all really depends on who you are as a person. For me personally, I am glad I chose this program as my second trip abroad. I wanted to ease myself in. I was able to go into this with some experience under my belt. But I found this far more rewarding in terms of cultural immersion and creating new relationships with different people. My goal was to really test my boundaries and I suprised myself as to how much I pushed myself. I 100% grew as a person and I created some very strong bonds with people I met. I've found that you really get back as much, if not more, of what you put in.

Everyone at ABV was very prompt to respond to my multitude of questions I had before my trip. Sarah was great helping me work out the dates of my trip, even when we had to change things up a bit. Before I left for Uganda I really thought I knew was I was getting myself into. I thought I was well prepared and knew everything I needed to get me through. What I realized when I got to Uganda was that I was totally unprepared. I guess I was experiencing culture shock on a massive scale. When I arrived, I really thought I wouldn't be strong enough to make it through. You see a lot of things that you don't see at home. I didn't expect the smells, the tastes, the feel, the homesickness, the heartbreak, the poverty, the hardship--which made it rough for me at times. What I also didn't expect was to be welcomed by some of the kindest people in the world, to be treated like a celebrity by a swarm of 7 year-old kids, for someone to devote their day just to do the things I wanted to do, for me to devote my heart to staying connected with these people, to have a new favorite food that comes from a roadside vendor on a dirty street, and to become who I am now as a result of what I experienced in Uganda. It's worth while to do the things that scare you. It makes you realize who you are and what you're capable of. It's so worth it. Go. I met some amazing, unimaginably kind people in Bulenga. I saw things that broke my heart and things that filled me with overwhelming joy. This trip was the hardest thing I have ever had to do, and the easiest thing I have ever done all at the same time, and if you go, you'll know exactly what I mean. Bulenga knocked all the things I thought I knew about Africa clear out of my head. It changed me. I am a stronger, kinder, and more humble person than I was when I left and for that, I feel really blessed to have been able to do this trip.

My volunteer trip to Belize was one of the most memorable and amazing things I have ever experienced. You are allowed to be independent, while receiving support both from your in country organization and ABV via email. I was very happily surprised that after about two days in Belize, an email came from ABV seeing how our arrival went and that they were there to keep in touch with. One of the concerns before the trip was from my parents (I am only 18, female, travelling with another 18 year old female) was travelling alone in Central America without a group or a definitive contact phone number. However, throughout our entire trip, we were able to email home from the orphanage and it is also worth looking into buying an unlocked cell phone at home and then buying an international sim card in an airport in the States. Being able to text home and have a phone in case of emergencies brought a lot of peace of mind, especially for our parents. The other volunteers at the orphanage (6 of us in total) were also so great, and with your few days off, it is definitely worthwhile to make an overnight trip to San Pedro, visit Altun Ha, and go cave tubing. Ask the orphanage director for lots of information about accommodations in San Pedro, and rides to Altun Ha and the Caves River Branch. The staff at the orphanage were so kind to us, and seemed to really appreciate our work. Bring a clothes line!!! You only need about a weeks worth of clothing items because you have access to a washing machine, but no dryer! There is a clothes line outside, but one for your room is nice for towels, etc. Powerbars are also a good idea, as well as rubber work gloves. The kids at the orphanage were amazing to work with, by the end of the two weeks you get really attached to them and leaving was the hardest part for sure... This location definitely needs more than a two week stay, although 2 weeks is just enough time to get to know the schedule and everyone s names and your way around town well!! Time goes by too fast. Overall, ABV was such a pleasure to work with. Our phone calls were always returned promptly, email replies came within 24 hours, and having them check up on us both during our trip and after we arrived home was very professional and made us feel well looked after. Cost wise, THIS TRIP WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY! I paid for the entire trip on my own (flights, program fees, insurance etc) and never regretted anything. I was very conscious of my spending there (I took $200 US) and was able to get along for water, food, the few days off, and a few small souvenirs without a problem. I very highly recommend this volunteer experience. It gave me such a refreshing outlook on my own life, I felt safe and looked after while I was there, I really cannot say enough good things about this project and ABV. You ll have to experience it for yourself!! :)

Volunteering with Abroader View (ABV) was an amazing experience. This was my second volunteer assignment with them in Uganda at Good Hope Orphanage. Sarah, the director in the U.S., is very thorough and responds quickly to questions. They also give you detailed information about your location and helpful hints before you go, like what to pack, ideas to maximize your time there (like prepping activities ahead of time if you'll be teaching, etc.), what to expect with your living conditions, the culture, and so much more. Once in Uganda, I felt like I had sufficient support from the field coordinator when I had questions or needed help with something, like getting transportation for a day trip on the weekend. It definitely helps if you are independent, flexible, and a self-starter because you may be the only volunteer while there and there isn't a lot of structure as someone may be used to in America. It was a life-changing trip and the work I accomplished felt like it made a difference in the community. It was great to go back and continue to foster the relationships with the people I had worked with two years ago and help out in so many different ways. I'm so thankful for everyone who helped make this an incredible experience, from the coordinators in the U.S. to those on the field, to the headmaster at the orphanage, the kids, and the Ugandans I stayed with at the compound. Go on a trip with ABV - it's totally worth it and it'll change your life! They are a great non-profit!!
